My Biography

Chicago-born Sandy Brown has received degrees in art and education from Northeastern Illinois University and has done post-graduate work in studio art and art history at Northern Illinois University. She’s been the Executive Director of both the Monroe Arts Center in Monroe, WI, and the Monroe Area Council for the Arts in Madisonville, TN.

As a watercolorist and mixed-media artist, Sandy enjoys not only analyzing structure, but exploring atmospheric texture as well. Her painting style is spontaneous and changes as she works. She paints without reference photos, preferring to be open to possibilities in the present moment. Among her strongest influences are the American Luminists, as well as Constable and Turner; additionally she’s drawn to van Gogh’s work for the passion of his brushwork and purity of color. Her focus is on painting change. Sandy’s emphasis on painting relationships, as opposed to “things” drives both what she paints and how she paints it.

An award-winning artist in both national and regional shows and exhibits, Sandy has taught and conducted workshops in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Tennessee. In May, 2014 Sandy won the Dot Porter Experimental Watercolor Memorial Award in the Tennessee Watercolor Society’s Biennial Exhibit in Nashville and, as of 2016, has the distinction of Signature Membership Status.

Her work can be found in Liz-Beth Fine Art, Knoxville, 5 Points Museum in Cleveland, The Art Shop in Athens, and The Art Market at the Arts Center in Athens.
